Determinate Variety of Tomatoes

Determinate tomatoes, or "bush" tomatoes, are varieties that grow to a compact height (generally 3 - 4'). Determinates stop growing when fruit sets on the top bud. All the tomatoes from the plant ripen at approximately the same time (usually over period of 1- 2 weeks) - a "determined amount of time." They require a limited amount of staking for support and are perfectly suited for container planting. Most people do not prune their determinate tomatoes although you can remove some of the bottom leaves to increase air flow and decrease disease pressure.

One common way of supporting Determinate Tomatoes is called "basket weaving." Check out this video from the University of Maine for a simple tutorial.
